The Victorian TAB has entered into an exciting long term partnership with the South African racing industry, which will mean an exciting new adventure for Victorian punters.
The Victorian TAB commenced pooling with South African races on Wednesday 23rd September 2009.
"Pooling" means that Victorian punters will now bet directly into South African betting pools for Win, Place, Exacta, Duet and Trifecta. This means bigger, more stable pools, and some new and interesting changes to your favourite bet types when betting on South African Racing!
The key changes you will notice when betting on South African races are:
- A Fourth place dividend is paid for all races with 16 or more starters
- No place betting is available for races with fewer than 8 starters
- Win, Place, Exacta, and Duet pools can jackpot
- For races with fewer than 8 runners, Duet pays on 1st and 2nd only
For a more detailed explanation see below. We hope you enjoy the new adventure!
Key Differences to betting rules for South African Race Meetings
For all South African race meetings covered by the Victorian TAB, South African Betting Rules will apply for Win, Place, Exacta, Duet and Trifecta. Please note, pooling will not occur for other bet types, so Victorian Betting Rules will continue to apply for Quinella, Running Double, Daily Double, Quaddie BIG6 and First 4 pools on South African races. The Victorian TAB will continue to run its own pools for these bet types.
All pools rules

- The South African minimum dividend for all pools is $1.00, however we will continue to declare and pay $1.04, unless there is insufficient commission available.
Win pool rules
- The Win pool will jackpot if the winning runner is unbacked
- For dead heats, if one combination is unbacked, there can be a jackpot and a dividend.
- Takeout rate is 20%

- For races with 16 or more starters, Place dividends are paid on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
- The Place pool will iackpot if all place getters are unbacked
- If a place getter is unbacked, there can be a jackpot and a dividend
- Takeout rate is 20%
Exacta pool rules
- The Exacta pool will jackpot if the winning combination is unbacked.
- Takeout rate is 25%
Trifecta pool rules
- No rule differences to Victorian TAB betting rules
- Takeout rate is 25%
Duet (Swinger) pool rules
- The Duet bet type is called 'Swinger'
- For races with fewer than 8 starters at the time of race schedule approval, no Duet pool will be opened
- If the number of starters drops below 8 after the pool is scheduled, the following rule differences will apply:
